Porsche had been successful at motor racing since the beginning, starting with the 356 model. This car used a tubular chassis with a 1100cc engine so it was both light and quick. This first model, with chassis number 356.001 was only a few weeks old when, in July 1948, it scored its first class victory in the Innsbruck City Race.
* The Innsbruck is manufactured using a highly advanced production technique called rotary forging. The rim of the wheels is forged at high pressure while the wheel is spin at high speed. this alters the molecular structure and enhances the strength of the alloy. The benefit is a much lighter weight than a regular cast wheel. Most importantly, the weight saving is in the outer rim of the wheel which dramatically reduces rotational mass and enhances vehicle performance.
